There is only a week to the European Team Chess Championship in Crete, Greece, one of the major chess events of 2007. This year ETCC will feature 7 of the top 10 players, as well as two ex women world champions and many 2700+ players. The European chess federations send their gala teams and ETCC 2007 will be a pure chess celebration.
A few days ago we had the chance to talk to IM George Mastrokoukos, CEO of the Organising Committee "ETCC 2007", and everrything seems to be in perfect conditions. The playing hall of more than 2800 sqare meters will be able to hold up to 900 spectators. The players will be accommodated (with full board provided) in the 5 star Creta Maris hotel 23km east of Heraklion.
However, ETCC 2007 will be much more than this, as the host country itself offers a great cultural experience for the guests. Greece is a country of cultural heritage, long eventful history, and often regarded as the cradle of western civilization and the birthplace of democracy.
Crete is a major island of the Mediterranean, the southernmost province of Greece. It has one of the richest cultural elements of the country as it has been under four different eras (including the Roman and the Minoian). The fame of the island started with King Minos, an ancient, legendary King of Crete. History has seen many other famous people from Crete - El Greco (1541-1614), Vitsentzos Kornaros (1553-1613), etc. However, the one that will surely move your soul (and feet) is Mikis Theodorakis, well know for Zorba's dance. It is a must song for all tavernas in Greece and around the world and has become the trademark music of Greece (aka Syrtaki) and a base for many parties. Enjoy the Zorba's dance!
