The best watched and sought after game of the championship was played between top seed GM Nigel Short and Championship leader GM Jones Gawain which finally ended in a draw. On other tables IM D Harika crushed South African IM Watu Kobese while GM Rajaram Laxman and IM Sahaj Grover came out victorious against their opponents and joined Gawain in the battle for the Championship.

On the top board International Master Grover Sahaj came well prepared to face Championship leader GM Jones Gawain. Gawain who is leading the championship by half a point was in no mood to take any risk and played a normal game which in the end resulted in a draw.

Grandmaster Jones Gawain played a technically perfect game to beat his opponent van der Nat Nicholas and became the sole leader of the 2011 Commonwealth and South African Open Chess Championships with a perfect score of 6/6.
After 5 rounds the championship is now jointly led by top seed Nigel Short, IM Sahaj Grover, GM Jones Gawain, FM van der Nat Nicholas and CM Oatlhotse Providence. Sahaj Grover will meet Nigel Short in the 6th round.
